Things to Do in Zion National Park in December

Tip: Before embarking on any expedition or adventure in Zion National Park, make sure you consult the National Park Service website for safety warnings, weather advisories, or urgent alerts.

Hiking

Hiking is a staple in Zion National Park during every season. While snow and ice still reach some locations of the park, the low elevation of the bottom of the canyons gives visitors a respite from colder temperatures. Most trails are open in the winter and provide excellent views atop the canyon cliffs.

Scenic Drives

This is a great way to stay warm and see large portions of Zion National Park in December. The U.S. Highway 9, the main access road into the park, is very reliable and weaves through most of the eastern section. The Kolob Canyon Road stays open in the winter and provides access to scenic viewpoints and trailheads. This road occasionally closes due to heavy snowfall. The Kolob Terrace Road closes every winter from heavy snow.

Photography

The sheer beauty of Southern Utah makes Zion a top spot for excellent winter photography. Stark contrasts between the snow-dusted canyon spires and the bare, red rock floors present rare photo opportunities. You may even catch deer, small mammals, rabbits, eagles, and hawks, which roam the park during the winter.
